Donnie Walsh spent nine days on the road with his basketball team, evaluating everything from Mike D'Antoni to the equipment manager.
Walsh, the Knicks' president, saw the good and bad of his team as well as the promising and the hopeless. No one knows exactly what Walsh, a lawyer at heart, is thinking because he's an old-school executive who likes to play it close to the vest. But several players and moments definitely stick out and we are free to assume what impressions the Knicks left him. Here are a few:
Toney Douglas: The rookie point guard was promoted to the starting lineup and performed well, particularly on the defensive end. One Celtics scout raved about Douglas' toughness and competitive spirit. That's not surprising since Walsh saw those same characteristics in Douglas when he decided to buy his draft rights from the Lakers for $3 million.
Whether Douglas can be a starting point guard on a championship-caliber team is debatable. Of course, that was also the knock on Charlie Ward, another physically and mentally tough guard from Florida State who guided the Knicks to the NBA Finals.

From what I've seen thus far from Tracy McGrady is a player who can't, at this point, consistently handle the impact of the NBA game. He's trying to get by on his size and his ability to see over defenders. Unfortunately on this team, one of their bigger weaknesses is the ability to create and attack off the pick and roll.
If there is no attack from the guard in a pick and roll, at least some action going to the basket, there is no reason for an opposing defender to help. Most cases, the players will just switch and negate the pick and roll altogether.
As a result, McGrady has settled for far too many jump shots, and the offensive ball movement thus has struggled. He has been kept on basketball's version of a "pitch count" by Mike D'Antoni, as McGrady has been playing around 25 minutes per game. Judging from players who have had micro-fracture surgery, the days of McGrady playing 45-48 minutes per game are probably over.
"You know what I miss?" McGrady recently told the Daily News. "Certainly, I miss being in close games. Down the stretch of games and just being able to take over a game ... you know, I miss... [Read More]

Jeremy Tyler quit Maccabi Haifa and returned home to San Diego on Friday, cutting short a disappointing first pro season.
The 18-year-old Tyler arrived in Israel on a wave of publicity in August after deciding to skip his senior year at San Diego High School to gain professional experience.
However, his time in Israel was fraught with problems, and he left two months before the end of the season.
“Due to personal matters, Jeremy chose to leave the team on his own will on March 18 and return home to San Diego,” Maccabi Haifa owner Jeffery Rosen said in a statement. “We wish Jeremy all the best.”
In the 10 games Tyler played for Haifa, the 6-foot-11 power forward averaged only 2.1 points and 1.9 rebounds in 7.6 minutes. Tyler, who reportedly earned a $140,000 salary, found it hard to adapt to the pro game and couldn't find a place in Maccabi Haifa's starting lineup.

Anyone know how this might affect the kid's eligibility for the upcoming draft? Any takers? He has a ton of talent though I imagine it's very raw. I don't like the fact... [Read More]

Last night’s Raptors game, wherein they squeezed out a win over the Atlanta Hawks, played out like an awkward date at the end of a once passionate relationship. After Bosh scored his 10,000th NBA point and became the first Raptor ever to reach that milestone, the crowd showed its love with a standing ovation. Bosh, chillingly, didn’t respond.
Basically, it went down like this:
Toronto: I love you, Chris. Maybe we should talk about spending our lives together.
Bosh [looking awkwardly at menu]: I wonder if the prix fixe comes with a drink.
Speculators are taking Bosh’s cool reception of praise as confirmation that the power forward will be leaving T.O. at the end of the season, when he becomes a free agent. Aside from winning the game with a free throw, Bosh’s performance had been a little lacklustre all night. According to the Star:
If…you watched almost everything up until the final throes, you had to wonder about the timing when the PA announcer promoted the latest sale at the in-house merchandise store: Bosh jerseys are currently going out the door at a discount. The cut rate, officially, was “in celebration” of... [Read More]
